Banff and surrounding area. Tuesday June 23, 2009

These pictures were taken from the top of Sulphur Mountain. We did not walk to the top, but took the gondola. Much easier. :-) This is downtown Banff. This is of the area south of Banff and the Bow River area before the clouds moved in. This is of Bow Rover and area south of Banff. taken from the top of Sulphur Mountain.
This is of one of the nearby peaks surrounded by clouds that moved in on us about a half hour later dropping rain and hail. We left soon after and got the hail out of there.

Lake Moraine

Eating lunch at Lake Moraine and sharing with our friend
the squirrel asking for more food
Rock pile at Lake Moraine. Lake Moraine lies a few miles from Lake Louise. It is smaller and only fills up completely when the run off is coming down in the spring and summer. It was formed when a chunk of the mountain came down and filled the canyon forming a lake. Water seeps out through the pile all year round.

The Tea House

Getting ready to cross one of the many snow fields we crossed to get to the Tea House. As you might guess, lunch was expensive, but worth every cent.
The Tea House. What a wonderful little piece of heaven that saved many of us who came unprepared to climb the 6 kilometers to the top. 4 were steep and rocky and snowy, and tough.
Looking down toward Lake Louise on the way back
A ledge we walked along on the way back to Lake Louise

Hiking Lake Louise

Posing at the starting end of the lake, before we wore ourselves out. Tomorrow we will not hike!
One of the majestic mountains along the trail at Lake Louise
On our first full day we decided to hike up the trail above Lake Louise, It was a tough climb and descent. We made it and were saved by the Tea House at the top of the trail. We started to just walk the easy trail to the end of the lake, but kept going, and going, and going. CRAZY!

McDonald Creek

A cloud covered mountain on the western side of the road through the park. It was closed so we had to go in, come out, go around, and back in the other side to see most of the way through.
The McDonald with a view downstream heading toward West Glacier
Janice and Carl Posing in front of the McDonald Creek which was running pretty full because of the high run off

Snake River

We were at Matt and Erin's home and went down the Snake with them on Thursday the 18th.
We took three cars up the canyon and ferried people and the raft Launching the raft
In the river and floating down at a slow pace with Matt manning the raft
Having a little extra fun. The trip down the Snake started our vacation off with a bang!
